If you haven’t seen this video, please click play above or click the link to watch it on YouTube. Once you have, come back and let’s break this one down.
Why’d it go Viral?
There are many reasons so let’s dig in.
1. It has a catchy title…sort of.
Ok, this one is a little bit of a stretch. It’s subtle but adding NSFW (Not Safe For Work) to the title makes viewers want to watch to see what is deemed as “not safe”. Captures the viewers attention.
2. Choose your own adventure.
The video seems like an ordinary video that you would find on YouTube. It’s campy, looks like no big deal but then at the end of the video you’re offered a choice. You’re interest is piqued. You click.
3. Catches the viewer off-guard.
When you click the “shoot” or “don’t shoot” buttons, you’re taken to the subtly branded profile page of “Tipp-Ex”. It look’s pretty much like the standard YouTube video page. The video is a follow-up to the previous one, or so it seems, until the hunter turns around and tells you to finish the writing the story. This is where your interest is truly piqued.
The hunter reaches out of the video screen, grabs the Tipp-Ex product, white’s out the word “shoot’s” and tells you to write something in it’s place.
That alone is cool enough but it gets better.
4. It’s fun.
The creator’s of this ad went above and beyond when they came up with this. This ad was truly meant for viral marketing. By allowing the viewer to type something into the blank space, they did a few important things:
- They almost force the viewer to stay and play with the ad
- They knew what might be typed in (we’ll discuss that next)
- They created something that HAD TO BE SHARED
5. IT HAS TO BE SHARED
In list item #2 above, I state that they knew what might be typed into the blank space. Obviously, not every word would be known but let’s think about the nature of this ad.
The creator’s gave you a blank space to type any word into. A large percentage of people are going to type in something outrageous or something that they think the ad would not show. Let’s type a few things that they surely wouldn’t show:
- Hugs – Covered
- Kisses – Yep
- Punches – Wrestles
- F_cks – Yep, we went there and so did they
Based on that last word alone, this is something that the people who typed it are going to want to share.
It was a brilliant move on the ad creator’s part to provide the video to go along with that word rather than shy away from it. I don’t have any analytics on this but I bet that last word contributed a big part of the social push that grabbed this video 14,760,410 views, 896 comments and 44379 subscribers.
So again, if you haven’t seen the video, go check it out. Just make sure that you can view this sort of thing at work because you will likely spend some time on this one. It’s already viral but I’m sure a few of your friends might like to see it too, so pass it on.
Oh, they may like to see this post as well, so make sure you pass this on
